JOHN EMANUEL

Born in Bury, Lancashire, in 1930, and moved to Cornwall in 1964. He has been painting since 1963 and has had a number of solo exhibitions around the country including Wills Lane Gallery, St Ives; Newlyn Gallery; Penwith Gallery; Gilbert Parr Gallery, London; Beaux Arts Gallery, Bath; Montpelier Sandelson, London and Sims Gallery, St Ives and a number of selected mixed exhibitions not only in England, but in Germany, Sweden and Switzerland. He has been featured in a number of publications including Studio - Artists in their Workplace - St Ives by Marion Whybrow, 1994 and was commissioned by the Tate Gallery, St Ives to make an etching for the opening of the Gallery as one of the "Porthmeor Printmakers." His works hang in many private and public collections. His drawings exhibit a clear, classical form and a simplicity of line which strengthens the relationship between the contours of the figure and the contours of the land. He loves the singular beauty of the Cornish coastline and the extraordinary light, unique to this part of the world. The notion of forms sleeping beneath the earth is a recurring theme.
