PHIL MCLOUGHLIN PhD SSA


Phil McLoughlin was born Phil Barker in Dumferline in 1946. Between 1964 and 1975 he worked as a foundry labourer, railway porter, jute millworker and psychiatric nurse. He exhibited with the Scottish Young Contemporaries in 1968 and 1969, and at the St. Andrews Festival in 1972. Phil was the winner of the first prize in the Pernod Exhibition at the RSA, Edinburgh in 1974. In 1978 he gave up art to train as a psychotherapist, before becoming a Doctor of Philosophy in 1985. He returned to painting as Phil McLoughlin in 2007. Phil was elected a Professional Member of the Society of Scottish Artists in 2012. Recent exhibitions include: Another Show, BP Atrium Gallery, Aberdeen, 2013; Aberdeen Artists’ Society Exhibition, 2013; Gallery Heinzel Aberdeen, Summer Exhibition, 2013; Society of Scottish Artists, Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, 2013; Royal Scottish Academy Open, Edinburgh, 2012 to 2013 and the Affordable Art Fair, Battersea, London , 2012. He has received the following awards: ‘Artist of the Year, Artist and Illustrator Magazine, 2012; Winner NS Macfarlane Charitable Trust Award, RGI, 2011; Royal Glasgow Institute, 2011 and 2012; Meffan Gallery, Angus, 2011, 2012 and Meffan Gallery Winter Exhibition, Angus, 2010, “Highly Commended”.
