Awards include: Alexander Prowse Award’, 2005; Linda Blackstone Gallery Award,2006; Sarah Samuels Fine Paintings Award, 2008 and the Frank Herring Award, 2011. “My painting methods are constantly evolving. I paint on mountboard as it is forgiving of the various processes I employ. I work in a studio from sketches and photographs that I have made. I tend to start with Gesso. It gives the board a ‘tooth’ for the final layer of pastel. After gesso I produce a loose underpainting in acrylic. This is often sploshed, scratched and scrubbed usually with ‘decorators’ paint brushes. Finally, I pull the painting together with charcoal and pastels. I prefer Unison pastels, and also the harder Conte pastels. I am impatient and therefore tend to work on one painting at a time. This will usually get pinned to the wall for several days/weeks when I feel I can take it no further and will then get further attention or amendments as ideas for it appear to me”.
