TOM GREENSHIELDS

TOM GREENSHIELDS 1915 - 1994. Born in 1915 on the family farm in Devon, Tom Greenshields was the grandson of the well-known Victorian painter Edouard van Goethem. Educated at Sherborne School, he went on to study at the Slade School of Art in London. After leaving the Slade he painted, mainly watercolours, and illustrated books, exhibiting at the Royal Academy. He served as a Major in the 94th Field Regiment and was awarded the Military Cross in Normandy after the invasion but shortly afterward was wounded in the leg. After the war he did not have much time for art until his son took over the farm in 1980. In 1981 he lost the use of his right hand in a farming accident, but successfully transferred his skills to his left hand, and devoted most of his time to sculpture. All his sculptures were modelled from life with the initial figure created in clay and a mould then made from which an exact resin marble copy was produced (the master copy). Final reproductions are individually hand cast and finished in either bronze, resin bronze, resin copper or resin marble. A catalogue of available sculptures is available upon request
